LanguagePlay needs an account to remember which words you know, and it keeps a count of how often the app gets used. That is the whole of it. It does not look at your browsing, and it does not sell anything about you to anyone.
What the account holds
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in, and to send confirmation links when you sign up or change your address. |
| Your password | Stored only as a cryptographic hash by our authentication provider. Nobody at LanguagePlay can read it. |
| Your Spanish level | To choose which words to show you. |
What your practice records
For every word you rate, we store which word it was, how many times you have had it right and wrong, which stage of the review schedule it has reached, and when it is next due. That record is the product: without it the app cannot space your reviews or tell you what you have learned.
Separately we keep a daily tally: for each day you use LanguagePlay, which app you used (the extension or the website), whether you used flashcards or the quiz, and how many words you reviewed. This is a count per day, not a log of individual actions — we do not record the time you opened the app or the order you did things in.
One account covers every LanguagePlay app, so a word learned in one counts in the others.
What we do not collect
- Your browsing. The extension replaces your new tab page. It cannot see the pages you visit, the tabs you have open, your history or your bookmarks — it does not ask Chrome for permission to do any of that. Its only permission is
storage, for keeping cards on your own device. - Anything for advertising. There are no ad networks, no advertising identifiers and no third-party trackers in the extension.
- Payment details. LanguagePlay does not take payments.
- We do not sell, rent or trade your information, and we do not share it with anyone except the service providers listed below, who process it on our behalf.
Who stores it
- Supabase holds the accounts and the learning data, on servers in Ireland (EU).
- Vercel hosts languageplay.io and serves the web version of the app.
Website analytics
languageplay.io uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits. It records the page visited, roughly where in the world the visit came from, and what kind of browser and device it was. It does not use cookies and does not identify you.
This runs on the website only. The Chrome extension contains no analytics script of any kind.
What sits on your device
To make a new tab open instantly and to keep working when you are offline, the app stores a batch of upcoming cards, any ratings that have not reached the server yet, and your chosen word type, practice mode and colour theme. In the extension this lives in Chrome's extension storage; on the website it lives in your browser's local storage. Signing out clears it.
Hearing a word spoken
The speaker button uses the speech feature built into your browser. The app sends nothing anywhere to make it work, though your browser may use its own online voices, which is governed by your browser's privacy policy rather than this one.
How long we keep it
Your account and its learning history stay until you delete them. You can do that yourself at any time: open the account menu in the app, choose Delete account and confirm with your password. It removes the account, your learning history and your activity record immediately and for good. There is no undo and no grace period.
You can also change your email address or password from the same menu. If you cannot get into your account, email privacy@languageplay.io from the address on it and we will delete it for you.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to see a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, or object to how it is handled. Write to privacy@languageplay.io and we will deal with it.
Children
LanguagePlay is not aimed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly create accounts for them. If you believe a child has an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or what we do with it, the date at the top will change and the previous version will be replaced here.
